Bookgaze

Bookgaze

Bookgaze allows users to find similar books that are similar to either an old favorite or a recent read. While there are several other sites that provide similar functionality, Bookgaze was designed to present the user with a very simple and sleek interface to quickly find and purchase books both at a computer and on an iPhone.

The system was built using jQuery and Backbone on the front-end, and utilizes a NodeJS service on the back-end that interacts with the Amazon's API amongst other services to retrieve recommendations.

What do New Yorkers complain about?

An interesting insight into what New Yorkers complain about. 311 is New York city's non-emergency services and information about city government. Whether it be garbage in the streets, potholes or complaints about loud music, 311 is the "go to" hotline that New Yorkers call to complain. As part of the NYC Open Data initiative, a significant amount of this data is made available in raw format. I was interested in finding out what the biggest gripes are by New Yorkers.

This analysis was done completely in R (packages: foreach, ggplot2, lubridate, RColorBrewer, sqldf, tm, wordcloud) using data that spans mid-January 2012 to mid-June 2013.
